Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) are one of the most commonly prescribed lower limb braces. My FootDr Wantirna custom makes these devices for each individual to encompass the foot, ankle and leg, finishing just below the knee. Various materials are available including high-temperature thermoplastic and carbon fiber. AFOs are prescribed to contend with a variety of problems, these may include muscle weakness, joint instability, arthritis, and high muscle tone.
AFO’s help to increase mobility and independence, assist rehabilitation, and/or to reduce pain. AFOs are also prescribed with the intention of preventing deformities. Depending on your needs they may be hinged (made to bend at the ankle) or solid (no movement at the ankle) and fitted on either one or both legs.
Indications:
- Foot drop
- Ankle mediolateral instability
