As 500 participants descend on D’Aguilar National Park on June 22-24, to take on the arduous Oxfam Trailwalker charity event, they’ll need all the emotional and physical support they can get. Thankfully our podiatrists are there to help!
Each year the team from My FootDr provide foot care services and support at our allied health tents, providing blister treatment and podiatry services during the walk. But prevention is better than cure.
Our My FootDr podiatry centres will be out in force to support the participants as they pass the final checkpoint in the demanding 100-kilometre trail walk from Mount Glorious to Mount Coot-tha, signalling 14 kilometres to the finish line.
Senior podiatrists and a handful of new graduates and student podiatrists will be on hand to deliver some running repairs on complaints such as blisters and advise participants on more concerning injuries.
My FootDr Fortitude Valley podiatrist Sam Lindsay said he was delighted to support the event for another year.
“It’s a truly unique event that brings people together from all walks of life, testing their mental and physical limits while also working together to help tackle poverty,” Mr Lindsay says.
“It is great to be back for yet another year, helping people to achieve their individual goals in order to help others.
He said endurance events placed an enormous amount of pressure on feet and participants were often under-prepared.
“They may be wearing new shoes that aren’t worn in yet or socks which absorb moisture poorly leading to the development of blisters,” he says.
“They need to keep their feet dry, remove any grit, dirt or sand from their shoes and take regular rest breaks to check their feet for any signs that something isn’t right.”
Podiatrist Kelly-Marie Ogden from My FootDr’s Brisbane CBD centre said the group was proud to volunteer again at this event.
“I personally admire the courage and determination of those who lay their bodies on the line for charity and anything My FootDr can do to help them overcome the physical barriers make it very worthwhile and rewarding,” she says.
“Foot health is something people often ignore, but in endurance events like this, you simply can’t afford to. We’ll have a team of professionals helping to keep participants on their feet while avoiding any serious risk of injury.”
